there were 13 of us - one baby girl died in infancy, however.. here's the link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24537885>1=43001.

Although they do have a way to support themselves adequately, I would have to disagree with having so many children on the basis of giving each child enough attention and also forcing the older ones into premature parenthood. Older children always have to care for the younger ones. Mom can't do it all.
ok, "leaving" can be mental &/or physical leaving.. what time in your life did you start?.
Yeah, the suck you in and you can't breathe or think for yourself. Hmph, education, hmph! That is the attitude of my jw family. The other side of my family is Yay! Education! Yay!

For those of you who have never had to live with the stigma of "welfare," here's to tossing that burger flipper, cleaning rag and pouring that Windex down the drain!

Ya know, I think this is the best thread I ever came up with because there are so many people here that have sacrificed so much and really worked hard and deserve some recognition. Here's to getting off welfare and making successes of ourselves (even if it will be in a year or so)
"From the bottom of my heart: I SALUTE YOU!"
Awakended at Gilead: WOW! That is so cool! I have tears in my eyes
Is that you?
he wanted to talk to the young ones in the congregation.
the main theme of the talk had to do with avoiding higher education.
basically the main idea was this: witnesses are losing alot of young people here in the last few years.
I'm angry now. Add to the list again with SHIFTING THE BLAME FOR FAILURE ONTO OTHERS AND NEVER TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR ONE'S ACTIONS. You cannot learn anything if you are not willing to take responsibility for your own mistakes. We all learn from mistakes.
Add IMMATURITY to that list, as well.

Add to that list of why Ph.D.'s live on the streets: LIVING BEYOND ONE'S MEANS.
I don't believe that it is in the WTS best interests to encourage college because once a person takes that zombie no thinking busting class called critial thinking, it's all down hill from there for their faith. All sorts of holes get punched in their faith when people begin to think for themselves and learn how to do effective independent research into sources outside of the publications.

One poster said that a degree didn't guarantee a job and that we were foolish to think so.
Not one of us ever said such a thing, but since this poster did, I'll address that.
True enough, but a HS diploma does!
It guarantees that you will work at McDonald's with no benefits for the rest of your life
Of course, not having a diploma at all will guarantee you much more than a HS diploma does: Window washing, janitorial work, living in mom's basement, living in the street begging, welfare, foodstamps...
Your chances of succeeding in life increase exponentially if you have an advanced degree.
It all depends 100% on what you do with that degree and which type of degree you get.
Why are people with Ph.D.'s living in the streets? You must ask the question: WHY?
The answer is usually personal tragedies like illness, mental illness, addictions, loss of social connections, loss of family in disasters, incompetence in using that degree in a wise way, economic emergencies, not daring to go where the work is, fear from moving away from family to go where the jobs are, laziness, making dumb decisions that the average person would not make, you got your degree from a diploma mill, fear of success...

This is so encouraging to me. I'm going after a masters in the fall after just getting my bachelors this month. I started out so slooooooowwwwww...but when I got into the 4 year college, it went right along on schedule. I couldn't figure out what I wanted to do. Now I'm in a financial position and mental place that I don't want to waste anymore time on getting somewhere. I'll be going full speed ahead for a Ph.D. in social welfare or criminal justice. I'll be able to teach it and have fun with it while making a living. I like both fields but one does pay more than the other.
Thank you for posting your experiences. It really helps me to see that it's OK to be older and in college. It's never too late to make a success of myself!
